Migrating Magento and Salesforce
"PowerSync" (referenced below) is the sub-brand of TechNWeb, which specializes in the creation of highly configurable, "out-of-the-box" software and extensions for Magento and Salesforce platforms.

Specialty paper supplier, Relyco, enjoyed PowerSync's flagship integration between Salesforce and Magento 1 for several years. Mid 2020, Magento 1 End of life compelled them to migrate to the Magento 2 platform. At this point, Relyco was unsure how to execute this complex project in a way that would retain the level of reliability that PowerSync had delivered over the years.

Since up to now, they only knew TechNWeb for their PowerSync integration between Magento and Salesforce, Relyco hired another Magento consulting agency to assist with the migration. Douglas MacGregor, VP of Operations at Relyco, said that the agency proposed a cogent solution after six months of "back and forth."

MacGregor said, "I could tell they had just googled, 'Sync Salesforce and Magento,' and they came up with this $800 solution."

Scrambling for a truly viable option, MacGregor reached out to PowerSync. Using Slack to collaborate in real-time, PowerSync and Relyco transition to a working integration within a few weeks. "I think that can be frustrating sometimes when you're working with someone, and it can be days in between responses," MacGregor said. "We never had that [with PowerSync] — it was more like hours."

According to MacGregor, what sets PowerSync apart is the fact that the company truly understands Magento and Salesforce.

"You get plenty of eCommerce people that maybe understand Salesforce to a degree," MacGregor said. "They say they can do it, but not if you don't really know the idiosyncrasies of both systems, which I think PowerSync really does. I think that's what really made it key — you knew both systems."

While working together on the Magento 2 + Salesforce integration, PowerSync CEO Igor Krasnykh was able to help identify additional functionalities that would cover more use cases and fill more gaps, particularly as it relates to conducting business as an online B2B merchant.
New Magento B2B Feature
"Relyco is a B2B company, and the implementation they were using before was kind of targeted towards more B2C," Krasnykh said. "Magento created an extension for B2B merchants conducting B2B business on their platform. We knew on Day One that we should review and look into leveraging the Magento B2B extension and see what else was missing within that functionality to help them get to that final perfect world state so to speak."

Because of his intricate knowledge of Magento and Salesforce, Krasnykh was able to find unique gaps within the B2B extension that Relyco could leverage. "Really, I felt like the other companies we talked to kind of understood what was happening, but they really didn't have any expertise on how to configure this B2B [aspect], and I felt like you guys really were on top of that," MacGregor said.

PowerSync also developed a Company Address Book feature for Relyco. In Magento, the address book is natively designed for B2C use cases assigned to the customer. In a B2B scenario, each customer has its own address book, which creates several challenges.

"Let's say John Smith who works for Apple Store A types in the address one way, and another employee types it in a different way," Krasnykh said. "That was creating a data nightmare in the Salesforce CRM."

The Company Address Book feature gives all employees the ability to select from a list of available addresses, eliminating address duplication in Salesforce. It also gave Relyco the nesting hierarchy structure, which Salesforce recommends using as a best practice.

PowerSync built the Company Address Book feature so that other B2B companies can leverage it as well.

"We did come across use cases where an address book for a B2B merchant did not make sense, but we also saw a large number of customers who do business the exact same way," Krasnykh said.
In their own words,

If you don't really know the idiosyncrasies of both systems, which I think PowerSync really does. You know both systems. Relyco was working with a company that was going to design the website, and they said they could sync with Salesforce. They were pretty confident about it, but I'm always weary because if you don't know Salesforce, and you say you can do it, I just don't believe that sort of thing. So I was a little cynical, and when they delivered the proposed solution, I could tell they had just googled, "Sync Salesforce and Magento," and they came up with this $800 solution.

And that's where I said, "Why don't I reach out to PowerSync?" And that's when we kicked off our discussion, and when we started speaking, that was when I realized you guys really know what you're talking about when it comes to Salesforce and Magento. And it was kind of a no-brainer at that point for me to recommend that we've got to use them to sync Magento and Salesforce.

The other driving force with Magento 2 was to use the B2B functionality, which of course is relatively new, you know, we're a B2B business, so we wanted to utilize that. Really, I felt like the other companies we talked to kind of understood what was happening, but they really didn't have any expertise on how to configure this B2B, and I felt like you guys really were on top of that.

It was really helpful to have you guys, who already understand that. And you know Salesforce. That's the key. You get plenty of eCommerce people that maybe understand Salesforce to a degree. They say they can do it, but if you don't really know the idiosyncrasies, of both systems, which I think PowerSync really does ... I think that's what really made it key — you knew both systems.
